Catharine Fewtrell

I’m Catharine, an independent funeral celebrant based in Hampshire, and I’m incredibly privileged to do the work that I do.

When someone dies, there is so much more to their story than the dates, places and achievements. My role is to find the person within those details, the character, the humour, the quirks, the relationships, the stories and the things that made them uniquely themselves.

I meet families at one of the most difficult times of their lives, and I know that no two people, families or funerals are the same. Some families have wonderful stories to tell and can talk about their loved one for hours. Others are struggling to find the words, perhaps because the death was sudden, the relationship was complicated, or grief has simply made it difficult to think clearly. I work with whatever they can give me and gently help them uncover the memories that matter.

I spend time listening, asking questions and getting to know the person I am going to represent. I then research and write a personal tribute that reflects their life honestly and warmly including the funny bits, the difficult bits and all the little details that make someone real. I believe there is room for laughter at a funeral as well as tears, and that sometimes the smallest story can say more about someone than a list of accomplishments ever could.
On the day itself, I aim to bring calm, warmth and professionalism. I understand that families are often anxious about how everything will unfold, so I take care of the words and the practical flow of the ceremony, allowing them to concentrate on saying goodbye.

I don't believe in one-size-fits-all funerals. I believe in creating a ceremony that feels like the person it is for, whether that is quiet and traditional, full of music and memories, gently humorous, unconventional, or a combination of all of these things.

Above all, I see myself as an advocate for the person who can no longer speak for themselves. I want their family and friends to leave feeling that they have heard their story, remembered who they were, and celebrated a life that was completely and wonderfully their own.

I feel very lucky to call this my work. It is a privilege, a responsibility, and, despite the circumstances in which I meet people, one of the most meaningful jobs I could ever do.
