Ceremony terms explained
- CelebrantA celebrant is a person who writes and leads ceremonies. Celebrants work across weddings, funerals, namings, vow renewals and other life events, with the content shaped around the people involved.
- RegistrarA registrar is a public official who records births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships. For a civil wedding, the registrar or registration service handles the legal requirements and official marriage record.
- Humanist celebrantA humanist celebrant leads ceremonies based on human lives, relationships and shared values rather than worship of a god. Humanist weddings, funerals and namings are usually non-religious and personal.
- Symbolic ceremonyA symbolic ceremony marks a commitment, identity, welcome or loss without changing anyone's legal status. Its meaning comes from the promises, witnesses and actions chosen by the people taking part.
