Ceremony terms explained
- Naming ceremonyA naming ceremony welcomes a child or adult into a family or community. It can include promises, readings, music and guideparents, but the ceremony itself does not register a birth or legally change a name.
- GuideparentA guideparent is an adult chosen to support a child and make promises during a naming ceremony. The role is a non-religious alternative to godparent, though families can define it in their own way.
- Unity ceremonyA unity ceremony is a symbolic act in which people combine, light, plant or create something to represent a new family or commitment. Common forms use candles, sand, water, trees or shared drink.
- CelebrantA celebrant is a person who writes and leads ceremonies. Celebrants work across weddings, funerals, namings, vow renewals and other life events, with the content shaped around the people involved.
