Humanist celebrants write ceremonies around people, relationships and shared values rather than worship. Some belong to a humanist organisation. Others are independent celebrants whose work has a similar non-religious style. Their legal authority, beliefs and professional memberships still need separate checks.
Read how each celebrant describes humanism, especially when a family includes religious relatives. Ask for a sample ceremony. For a wedding, ask whether the celebrant is authorised to solemnise a marriage in the nation where the ceremony will take place. The title does not answer that question.
When this specialism fits
This approach can suit people who want a clearly non-religious ceremony grounded in the life, relationship and choices being marked. It is also useful when the family wants the ceremony to state its values plainly rather than avoiding the subject. It may be a poor fit when a required prayer, blessing or act of worship must sit at the centre of the service.
What to plan before booking
