Questions
- What does a wedding celebrant do?
- A wedding celebrant writes and leads the ceremony you want, using your vows, readings and stories rather than a set script.
- Can a celebrant legally marry you?
- In England and Wales a celebrant ceremony is not the legal marriage. Couples usually complete the legal register-office (or licensed venue) appointment separately, then hold the celebrant-led ceremony where they like.
- How do I choose a wedding celebrant?
- Read the biography as if you were hiring a writer. Check that they cover your venue, whether they publish a starting price, and whether reviews describe the kind of ceremony you want. Then enquire. The celebrant replies directly.
Ceremony terms explained
- Wedding celebrantA wedding celebrant plans, writes and leads a wedding ceremony. The ceremony can include personal vows, family stories, readings, music and rituals that would not fit a standard register office script.
- Legal wedding ceremonyA legal wedding ceremony follows the marriage law of the UK nation where it takes place. The right person must conduct or attend it, the couple must complete the required preliminaries, and the marriage schedule or document must be signed correctly.
- Wedding vowsWedding vows are promises exchanged by a couple during a ceremony. They may include words required for a legal marriage, personal promises written by the couple, or both in separate parts of the event.
- HandfastingHandfasting is a symbolic ritual in which a couple's hands are joined or wrapped with cords or ribbons while promises are spoken. It can be part of a wedding, commitment ceremony or vow renewal.
